Writing tip #23

(as discovered yesterday)

Beware the cooking of food items on the stove while at the same time editing your manuscript, lest you become too involved in said edit. It makes for a wasted, burnt food item and a very non-writerly, smoke-filled environment.

In such cases, one is forced outdoors which works if you live in Arizona and it's a beautiful, warm winter day.

What have you ruined, missed, forgotten because you were working on your manuscript?

I'm glad you didn't burn your house down. lol

Fortunately I've not completely forgotten anything but I have been late for a few appointments.

Try countless dinners which sucked onto the bottom and sides of the pan like quick-drying cement. For some reason my husband's not so thrilled with such things. Who knew?

Mom, you're funny.

Oh how often have I said: "Just a quick edit. One little thing." Although I've burned many dinners that way, the worst is when I forget to pick up the kids. They're a little more vocal than the vegetables.

I stay clear of the kitchen, since I'm fortunate enough to have a husband who loves to do the cooking.

However...I have been known to forget to pick up my daughter or son from school once or twice because I was so "into" my manuscript. (Never more than twice, though)

I've forgotten to sleep a few times. Who needs sleep? Plus the less sleep you get, the more . . . uh creative you are.

Forgot to turn my mom from one side to the other in her bed on time. That is why I set the stove timer cause eventually it drills into my cranium that time is up.

Forgotten food like boiled eggs waiting to be put in the fridge. I am sure I burned or over cooked things but that happens a bit so not sure.

Glad house is ok if smelly. Glad the editing is coming along well.

I have a (small but still impressive for sheer blackness) gallery of photos consisting of things I burnt while writing and editin, and I may have forgotten a child (once or twice).

Uh, yeah, similar thing happened to me on Monday. Editing and making tuna casserole at same time. Sat down to eat wondering why it was runny. Took one bite. Yuk! Forgot to add the TUNA! Kinda important. Funny post :)

Funny, Maria. I believe I saw your email about the missing tuna!

Mostly I miss when people are talking to me. Out of the fog of words on the computer I hear my husband say to whoever is in the room "... she's into her book, and can't hear you."

kids - but they always text to remind me that they're waiting, so they never wait very long

sorry about your dinner - i hate when I go to the effort of cooking (which, in and of itself, is a miracle) and I forget I should be cooking and not on the computer

love your writing tips!

But how awesome that your manuscript was so riveting that you forgot all about dinner! Great sign!
